Some would never go out into the wilderness and homestead. They love living in large cities, or towns, where hospitals, malls, and schools are nearby. Then again, while some others will choose to live in a more rural setting, they will still rave over how wonderful the interstates are with their easy access to more populated and congested areas. Buying cheap land doesn’t even come to mind.
And yet, others have something totally different in mind. They want a secluded home on cheap land. They like the lower property values and maintenance. Often times they are looking for a farm to grow food on, or a ranch for cattle or sheep.
Of course, the amount of work this will take depends on how remote the homestead is. If someone could purchase cheap land ($199) an acre, they would see that it is not going to be easy. Because the less expensive acreage is often times filled with snakes, rocks, sand and sage brush. Furthermore, there are no fancy supermarkets in the wild. Everything will have to be stored up. Dry wood, heating or cooking oil, water will have to be brought in. If an individual wants electricity, they are going to have to make their own with either solar panels or some type of wind generator. Moreover, probably, the less than perfect roads will at times be a hindrance, because they will never be improved. For much of the land is on or at least close to public lands.
Often times ranchers or other investors will purchase a large amount of inexpensive land. If the original price was low, and if they could keep it for twenty years or more before selling, they could see a very high return for their investment. And because of inflation, this return can often be as high as eight times their initial purchase price.
Then again, some will get tired of the original idea of cutting a home out of the wilderness, and will break up their large acreage only to pass their once unique dream on to someone else. Then in turn, they make money off their venture.
It’s enough to make one think they have the right idea. Buy property at a low price now, subdivide to get a higher price per acre, or just hang on and sell for more money later. This is probably why so many feel it is nearly impossible to lose money with this type of venture.
Of course, some will disagree with the notion all together of buying cheap land for resale later. They have the time or the resources to be self-sufficient. They want to live off the land. They want to see how good hard work and solitude can be.
